Landscape Assignment
Produce 6 landscape images that emphasize lighting to convey a sense of place and mood. Although you may include people and man-made structures in your photos, do not allow these elements to become the main subjects of your photographs.
Make lots of exposures at each location. Experiment with depth of field, angle of view, focal length, etc. so as to get several variations from which to choose. Your photos should be designed to convey the spatial qualities of the location, so there will be no need to shoot details or close-ups.
It is recommended that you scout each location first, taking notes on the desired lighting and time of the day best for that location. Then, head out early the next day to set up and wait for hat light to paint your scene.

I will go over more details with you on Tuesday and Thursday but if you would like to get started on it before then, use that website. Consider what you did and did not like from the website reviews when creating your website.
Whatever your URL and Website name is, make sure it ties to YOU and is something unique! Once you create this, it will be used for everything else you do for your photography business such as business cards, leave behinds, etc.

GHOSTLY IMAGE
Create a "ghostly" image using one of the following techniques or if you have an idea of your own, you may do that. The final image MUST have a "ghostly" theme. Have fun and be creative!!! If you are having trouble with ideas, Google is a great place to start, I have included some examples.
Set the theme to black and white. Shoot a creepy location with a dramatic still effect. Then capture a portrait of a classmate (best to use the white back drop in class). You should have 2 images, one of the setting and one of the person.
Open both images in Photoshop, using your creepy setting as one layer and the portrait as another layer.
Remove the portrait photo from its background in Photoshop using the magnetic lasso, set it as a new layer in the background and adjust its opacity. Then use the blur effect to create the ghostly effect that you wanted to achieve.
**The sub has my Photoshop book if you have any trouble with these tools, or you can look up tutorials online.
You may also try a long exposure for a "ghostly" image, although you will need to have little to no light so your image is not over exposed. Pick your setting and open your shutter while in "bulb" and have someone move in/out of the frame with the shutter still open.
The blur techniques that you used in your motion assignment are other techniques you could use to create a "ghostly" image.
Have a safe and fun Halloween photographers!

REFLECTIONS
It is time once again for the Reflections program! This is a great opportunity for students to be recognized for their artistic talent and a way to build their high school resume. Last year we had over 100 entries!
Started in 1969 by the National PTA, Reflections encourages students to express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Students create and submit works of art in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts. Each year there is a different theme. This year's theme is "What is your story?"
Entry forms are available in the Library or the Kennel. Deadline for entry submission is Wednesday, October 19th.

Assignment 2: Reflectors
Research the proper use of reflectors:
You will need to produce 5 images in artificial light using a reflector and 5 images in natural light using reflectors. 10 portraits total
Each portrait image needs to have a different background/location/pose but may use the same person.
Submit photos on your blog BEFORE CLASS on September 16th, we will critique that day.
Commercial Photography Assignment 2:
Basic Exposure
Equipment:
Camera, tripod
Formal Assignment:
The Basic Exposure Constant (BEC), is an exposure calculation system based on analyzing the sun and shadow conditions. It is a method for measuring light without an electronic meter.
Shoot outside during daylight hours as this system is less reliable at dawn or sunset.
Using a tripod, compose interesting images in 4 different lighting conditions (see BEC hand out for categories).
For each of the four lighting conditions, make four exposures in the following order…
1. Using the starting BEC settings
2. Equivalent exposure #1 (1-stop wider aperture with 1-stop faster shutter)
3. Equivalent exposure #2 (1-stop smaller aperture with 1 stop slower shutter)
4. According to your camera meter
[total of 16 images]
Record the exposure info on the accompanying Exposure Tracking Sheet.
Remember to use a tripod so that the camera remains stationary for each group of photos. Framing should be identical for each series.
To use the BEC effectively remember to:
1. Select an appropriate ISO to the brightness of the lighting condition, then keep the same ISO throughout the entire suite of 4 images. You may change ISO’s for each of the various lighting conditions.’
2. Set the shutter speed to be the reciprocal of the ISO.
3. Select the f/stop based on the lighting as described on the BEC chart.
Submit…
16-Jpeg images representing 4 different lighting situations. Select these 16 images and place on your blog.

Assignment 1: Documentary Portraiture
•Assignment: 10 Digital Image Finals \ 200 Roughs
•Criteria: After speaking to your subject, decide what magazine a series of portraits would be featured in. Choose a magazine that fits with their interests. These are documentary portraits, the photos need to tell about the subject without words.
•Requests: You need to get to know your subject well. It should not look like you took the photos at one session or over one day. Do not make the photos boring! You need to find and express what is interesting about your subject. Finding what it is and how to make in exciting in photos is the challenge of the assignment.
•Cover Shot Studio Portraits – Create 4 finals \ 100 roughs as extra images shot in the studio for cover options of the magazine. Make sure the look fits the theme of your other photos. Variety is key for cover photo.
•Critique: Thursday September 9th, submit final photos on your blog BEFORE CLASS.
Commercial Photography Assignment 1: Style
Pick a photographer that you admire, they can be well known or someone local. Research the photographer you have chosen and write a 2-3 page paper (double spaced, 12pt Times New Roman or Courier New font). The paper should include the background of the photographer, their style and why you chose them. Submit the paper via Google Drive to Coach Dobrzenski
You will also need to choose 3 of their photos to recreate. Submit all 6 photos on your blog.

Commercial & Advanced Commercial Photography 2016-17
Hello and welcome to Bowie Photography!!
This year we will be using blogger to publish and post all of our assignments on the internet.
To accomplish this we have to set up an account: Please follow the instructions carefully. Its important that you do each step correctly and that you remember all the vital information so you can get back to it later. For those of you who have already established a blog in Photoj, please make sure you can access it, and send me an email as described at the bottom. You may also want to rename your blog to something else, you cannot change the URL, but you can change the name. Another thing you might want to do is to revert all of your current posts to drafts, so they are not visible anymore except to you.
Here's how:
What you will need
· Internet access
· An Email account
First – Create a Blogger account
Open Safari - you can use Mozilla Firefox, but sometimes the interface between the Macintosh computers and Firefox can cause problems. Safari is the native internet browser for Macintosh, so its the one I recommend.
· Go to http://www.blogger.com/
· Click on the orange "Sign Up" box at the top right of your screen - if you have a gmail - this will be really easy because blogger is a gmail product.
In “Step One”
· Enter your email address
· Enter a password and WRITE IT DOWN
· Enter a display name – Do NOT use your full real name. To be safe, we will keep our blogs semi-anonymous - I recommend you do something like Firstname_lastinitial_blog, or something similar. No one can see this unless you leave your computer logged in on accident, but lets be safe.
· Enter the word verification
· Click on the “accept terms box, and hit continue·
· If there are any problems, they will show up in red.
Fix the problems
In “Step Two”
· In the blog title box, enter “first name’s Commercial (or Advanced Commercial) Photography Blog” (Ex Michael’s Commercial Photography Blog) - this is what will show up at the top of your blog - My blog is called Bowie Commercial & Advanced Commercial Photography.
· In the (URL) box, enter the same thing as the title, but with no spaces or apostrophe (Ex: michaelsjournalismblog) - this URL can be seen by anyone, so please keep it school appropriate.
· Hit “Check Availability”
· If it is available, hit continue. If it is not, select one of the suggestions, and then hit continue.
· Select a template and hit continue·
You did it!
If you are new to this program, you will need to practice making your first blog post, here's how:
Hit “Start Posting”
Type “Welcome to my blog” in the post subject line, and hit “Publish Now”
Click on “View Blog” to see the results.
Select and copy the web address (URL) of your new blog (ex: michaelsjournalismblog.blogspot.com)
Open your email - either gmail directly from blogger, or open the one you use (i.e. yahoo or hotmail)
Send an email with the following info to:
bowie.comm.photo@gmail.com
Subject : My blog
Full Name: ____
Paste URL here: ______

Silhouettes
If the sky lacks punch, change the white balance setting to Cloudy or Shade – either in-camera or later when you‘re converting your RAW files.
Crisp, clear days are often followed by dusk skies ablaze with color. To make the most of this richness, look for a clearly defined subject to place in front of it.
Take a meter reading from an area of the sky that‘s not too bright or dark, lock the exposure in and recompose to include the subject. It‘ll be rendered as a silhouette against a saturated sky.
Don‘t worry about clipped shadows on the exposure histogram – you don‘t want to record detail in the subject.
