Plug in your hard drive and open Lightroom the way we discussed, if you need help doing this please come see me! Be sure to check you have opened the correct catalog!

Edit 2 of your existing photos using Lightroom and some of the basic techniques you learned in the tutorial. Post your before AND after picture, you should have 4 total images. You will have time to work on this during class today and the next class period. It is due by Friday October 7th.

REFLECTIONS

It is time once again for the Reflections program! This is a great opportunity for students to be recognized for their artistic talent and a way to build their high school resume. Last year we had over 100 entries!

Started in 1969 by the National PTA, Reflections encourages students to express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Students create and submit works of art in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts. Each year there is a different theme. This year's theme is "What is your story?"

Entry forms are available in the Library or the Kennel. Deadline for entry submission is Wednesday, October 19th.

Advanced Commercial Photography

Take a picture in the studio demonstrating Split, Broad, Rembrandt, Loop and Butterfly (all with fill also) so 10 images total...due next Tuesday (Sept 27th)  by the end of class.

Commercial Photography- Composition

Composition- DUE Friday September 16th

Formal Assignment:

Create 2 sets of photographs demonstrating each of the following compositional elements. Shoot the first set of images at any distance to subject. (Total of 10 images)

Shoot a second set of images; these can be completely different subject matter. Set your lens to manual focus. Move in as close to your subject as your lens will allow while retaining a sharp focus, then move towards and away from subject slightly and select the final focus area to get a closer-up image. Remember to keep important subject areas in focus and shoot a second set of composition examples. (Total of 10 images)

1.        Rule of thirds

2.        Leading line/Perspective/Diagonal lines

3.        Vertical lines

4.        S-curves

5.        Balance (both symmetrical and asymmetrical)

6.        Light as the subject (do not include the light source, but rather the effects of this light)

7.        Contrast of content (visual or cognitive tension)

8.        Circular composition

9.        Rhythm

1.     Frame in a frame

Strive to create interesting photographs. Compose these images carefully, paying close attention to camera angle, distance, and lighting. Simplify your designs when possible, and be sure watch the edges of the frame…  [total of 20 images]

Grading…will be based on following all directions and on the “5 C’s” of good photography – Color, Contrast, Composition, Content, and Credibility.

Assignment 2: Reflectors

You will need to produce 5 images in artificial light using a reflector and 5 images in natural light using reflectors. 10 portraits total

Each portrait image needs to have a different background/location/pose but may use the same person. 

Submit photos on your blog BEFORE CLASS on September 16th, we will critique that day. 

Commercial Photography Assignment 2:

Basic Exposure

Formal Assignment:

The Basic Exposure Constant (BEC), is an exposure calculation system based on analyzing the sun and shadow conditions. It is a method for measuring light without an electronic meter.

Shoot outside during daylight hours as this system is less reliable at dawn or sunset.

Using a tripod, compose interesting images in 4 different lighting conditions (see BEC hand out for categories).

For each of the four lighting conditions, make four exposures in the following order…

1.       Using the starting BEC settings

2.       Equivalent exposure #1 (1-stop wider aperture with 1-stop faster shutter)

3.       Equivalent exposure #2 (1-stop smaller aperture with 1 stop slower shutter)

4.       According to your camera meter

Record the exposure info on the accompanying Exposure Tracking Sheet.

Remember to use a tripod so that the camera remains stationary for each group of photos. Framing should be identical for each series.

To use the BEC effectively remember to:

1. Select an appropriate ISO to the brightness of the lighting condition, then keep the same ISO throughout the entire suite of 4 images. You may change ISO’s for each of the various lighting conditions.’

2. Set the shutter speed to be the reciprocal of the ISO.

3. Select the f/stop based on the lighting as described on the BEC chart.
