Commercial Photography Assignments

Commercial Photography Assignments

3rd 6 weeks

Fall Break Fun!-Minor-Due November 30th (Present 30th/1st)

Submit 8 photos from a fall break meal. They must be from the same meal (does not have to be from Thanksgiving, be creative!). Check out food magazines and websites for inspiration, imagine these photos being used in one of the publications viewed.

Landscape-MAJOR Due November 23rd (Present 23rd/24th)

Formal Assignment:
Produce 8 landscape images that emphasize lighting to convey a sense of place and mood. Although you may include people and man-made structures in your photos, do not allow these elements to become the main subjects of your photographs.

Make lots of exposures at each location. Experiment with depth of field, angle of view, focal length, etc. so as to get several variations from which to choose. Your photos should be designed to convey the spatial qualities of the location, so there will be no need to shoot details or close-ups.

It is recommended that you scout each location first, taking notes on the desired lighting and time of the day best for that location. Then, head out early the next day to set up and wait for hat light to paint your scene.

Use a tripod. Use a tripod. Use a tripod. [total of 8 images]

Creative Assignment :
(Same landscape/different light) Create two pairs of landscape images from two different locations. Each image of the pair must be shot from EXACTLY the same location, but under dramatically different lighting conditions. You may shoot at different times of the day, or even on different days, but you must use a tripod and mark your spot exactly. Cropping should be identical on each image of the pair. The goal is that each image will convey a very different mood depending upon the lighting conditions. Some of the most interesting lighting for landscapes will be experienced at dawn, dusk, or in the vicinity of changing atmospheric conditions, like fog, rain, or even thunderstorms. But be sure to take a friend with you. Be safe [total of at last 4 images]

Grading…
Will be based on following all directions and on the “5 C’s” of good photography – Color, Contrast, Composition, Content and Credibility..

Holiday Scavenger Hunt-Minor-Due December 4th (Present 7th/8th)

Details to be revealed later :)

Architecture-MAJOR Due December 7th (Present 7th/8th)

Formal Assignment:
Select an interesting architectural environment and create a portfolio of 3 images that describe the space using a long, medium and close up camera-to-subject distance.

You are crating a portfolio of images that the architect could show to his or her prospective clients. Therefore, these 3 images should work together to articulate, in a cohesive voice, the salient aspects of the space. You’ll need an establishment photography (an overall view), a medium-detail photograph (showing some details in context with the overall view), as well as a close up detail shot. You may include photographs of interiors for the latter two.

Frame the space in compositionally strong manner, paying close attention t o the way the edges of your image relate to nearby architectural elements. Except for intentionally induced forced perspective, vertical lines in most architectural photography are held vertical. Make LOTS of exposures in order to get three exceptional images. Then, repeat the whole procedure to produce a second portfolio from a different architectural space. [total of 6 images]

Hint: Look to architectural magazines such as Dwell, Arts & Architecture, or Metropolis Magazine for ideas.

Creative Assignment:
(man-made vs. nature) 2 pairs of photographs comparing forms found in nature (tree, cloud, water, grass, rock, etc.) to man-made architectural forms. Image pairs should be matched in composition, angle of view, and overall “feel.” Images of each pair should easily translate as mimicking each other – they should look very similar to each other in the way they are seen and photographed. [total of 4 images]

Grading…
Will be based on following all directions and on the “5 c’s” of good photography – color contrast, composition, content, and credibility.

Event and Free shoot are both due on Thursday December 10th

Commercial Photography Assignment

Self-Portrait vs. Selfie

Due: Nov. 16th (presentations Nov. 16th/17th)

Research the difference between a self portrait and the selfie, here is a good place to start:
http://blogs.getty.edu/iris/whats-the-difference-between-a-selfie-and-a-self-portrait/

Write a brief paragraph on the difference between the two and which one you prefer (and why); also post one self portrait and one selfie. The self portrait should be well thought out and edited using a tripod and shutter release, while the selfie can be something fun from your smartphone.

Commercial Photography Assignment Oct. 29th/30th

Commercial Photography Halloween AssignmentOctober 29th/30th

TO BE COMPLETED IN CLASS

Create a "ghostly" image using one of the following techniques or if you have an idea of your own, you may do that. The final image MUST have a "ghostly" theme. Have fun and be creative!!! If you are having trouble with ideas, Google is a great place to start, I have included some examples.

Set the theme to black and white. Shoot a creepy location with a dramatic still effect. Then capture a portrait of a classmate (best to use the white back drop in class). You should have 2 images, one of the setting and one of the person.
Open both images in Photoshop, using your creepy setting as one layer and the portrait as another layer.
Remove the portrait photo from its background in Photoshop using the magnetic lasso, set it as a new layer in the background and adjust its opacity. Then use the blur effect to create the ghostly effect that you wanted to achieve.
**The sub has my Photoshop book if you have any trouble with these tools, or you can look up tutorials online.
You may also try a long exposure for a "ghostly" image, although you will need to have little to no light so your image is not over exposed. Pick your setting and open your shutter while in "bulb" and have someone move in/out of the frame with the shutter still open.
The blur techniques that you used in your motion assignment are other techniques you could use to create a "ghostly" image.
Have a safe and fun Halloween photographers!

Depth of Field with Books- DUE: Friday October 16th (Present on 19th/20th)
Formal Assignment:
Create a still-life composition of 3 objects placed on the pages of an open book, choose your objects and book with intention so that the objects somehow relate to the text in the book. Think creatively. This will configure in your grade.

·         Arrange the objects at varying distances from the camera.
·         Using a tripod and a normal focal length lens (about 40 mm), frame you image to get a tight composition with little or no background.
·         Make sure you can see some of the text in the composition
·         Light the still-life using window or artificial light; either way, use reflector cards to add fill light into the shadow areas.
·         Use manual focus

1.       Focusing consistently on the front object, make 3 correct exposures adjusting the f/stop from widest to middle to smallest. [total of 3 exposures]

2.       Focusing consistently on the middle object, make 3 correct exposures adjusting the f/stop from widest to middle to smallest. [total of 3 exposures]

3.       Focusing consistently on the far object, make 3 correct exposures adjusting the f/stop from widest to middle to smallest. [total of 3 exposures]

Creative Assignment:
Make a creative image using a shallow depth of field. Then, without moving the camera, take the same picture using a very small aperture to produce a longer depth of field. See if you can create a pair of images wherein the meaning has been dramatically changed with the changing of the depth of field. [total of 2 images]

Submit…

Formal assignment: A total of 9 images. You MUST post them on your blog before class on the 16th (B day still need to submit on the 16th).

Creative assignment: 2 additional images

Moving toward the camera plane [total of 3 images]
For each activity, make your 3 exposures using radically different shutter speeds. Be sure you’ve produced good examples of both frozen action and blurred motion.

B. Make 3 exposures using the technique of panning. Be sure to select a shutter speed that allows you to streak the background while keep the main subject sharp. Pre-focus if necessary. [total of 3 images]

Creative Assignment
Produce 2 photographs where blur is used to create an artistic, creative image. Break the rules. Plan your composition and think of how blur will affect the meaning of the photograph. Use blur poetically. Create an image… No passing cars or jogging people for this shot.

Comm. Photo. Assignment 2

Commercial Photography Assignment 2:
Basic Exposure

Equipment:

Camera, tripod

Formal Assignment:
The Basic Exposure Constant (BEC), is an exposure calculation system based on analyzing the sun and shadow conditions. It is a method for measuring light without an electronic meter.

Shoot outside during daylight hours as this system is less reliable at dawn or sunset.

Using a tripod, compose interesting images in 4 different lighting conditions (see BEC hand out for categories).

For each of the four lighting conditions, make four exposures in the following order…

1.       Using the starting BEC settings
2.       Equivalent exposure #1 (1-stop wider aperture with 1-stop faster shutter)
3.       Equivalent exposure #2 (1-stop smaller aperture with 1 stop slower shutter)
4.       According to your camera meter

[total of 16 images]
Record the exposure info on the accompanying Exposure Tracking Sheet.

Remember to use a tripod so that the camera remains stationary for each group of photos. Framing should be identical for each series.

To use the BEC effectively remember to:

1. Select an appropriate ISO to the brightness of the lighting condition, then keep the same ISO throughout the entire suite of 4 images. You may change ISO’s for each of the various lighting conditions.’

2. Set the shutter speed to be the reciprocal of the ISO.

3. Select the f/stop based on the lighting as described on the BEC chart.

Submit…

16-Jpeg images representing 4 different lighting situations. Select these 16 images and place on your blog.

DUE DATES:
A day due on September 24th, we will be presenting that day.
B day due on September 25th, we will be presenting that day.
